Math for Journalists

1. COLLEGE BUDGET

*Of the college's budget, 67% comes from the state, 5% comes from student tuition and 28% comes from fees, grants and gifts.

*The most significant source of funding comes from the state and the least amount comes from tuition.

* About two thirds of the schools budget comes from the state, a little less than a third of it comes from fees, grants and tuition and only 5% comes from student tuition.

2. PRISON TERMS

* The average prison term for someone convicted for aggravated assault is 1 year and 1o months.
* The median prison term for someone convicted for aggravated assault is I year
* The median is more representative, since it shows that most of the inmates are actually sentenced to 1 year in prison, whereas the average isn't equally as representative.

3. California's state sales tax is 8.5%. If restaurants become exempt from the sales tax someone who pays $5 dollars for a meal once a week will save $21.45 a year. Someone who spends $20 dollars for a meal once a week will save $85.80.

  1. 1) Good, but write out "percentage" (AP style)
    2) OK. BTW, the average is thrown off by that one seven-year prison term.
    3) Good job.
